Meet & greet: instruments from all over the world
On 28 APRIL 2023 ISCM-Vlaanderen, Kunstenpunt and Concertgebouw Brugge organise a sector meeting on composing for instruments from all over the world.
WHY?
We know little about the fascinating worlds of the balafon, darbuka, erhu, kannel, kemenche, duduk, oud or sheng. They occasionally appear in calls for works by new music festivals, but they often don’t get much response. This is definitely not due to a lack of interest, but how does a composer approach such a challenging exploration? It’s about time we delve into those instruments.
During this sector meeting we go all out for sharing enthusiasm and expertise. Therefore, we’ll be organising a meet and greet with experts. We’re looking for musicians willing to share best practices or insights from a successful project with contemporary music for instruments from all over the world.
CONCRETE: each speaker gets a timeslot of 10 minutes for a short presentation or demonstration (if desired with video), which will give us plenty of topics for discussion. After the presentations everyone’s invited for a chat with some drinks and bites.
The ‘meet and greet’ will take place the 28th of April 2023 from 4 PM until +/- 6 PM.

This can be in form of a short video or written proposal (max. 1 A4) and can be in rough lines or short points.
A fee is provided for the speakers.

Key note speaker Olmo Cornelis will kick off the event. He is a composer, musicologist, ethnomusicologist and musician. Fascinated by music from Central Africa, it forms the common thread in his activities. In his doctoral research at the Conservatory of Ghent, Cornelis researched how to use computational techniques to describe music away from Western musical concepts. The results offer new possibilities for composers and musicians in the use of timbres, scales, vocal and instrumental techniques, among others.
This presentation is followed by a conversation with the London-based composer Bushra El-Turk, in whose work Western and Eastern musical traditions merge and socio-cultural issues are addressed critically, while not losing sight of her own Lebanese roots. Commissioned by Concertgebouw Brugge, El-Turk wrote Vane (for taegŭm, kamāncha & accordion) for the Angel Room. The creation will take place on Friday evening 28 April at 7 PM. At 8 PM LOD will present her latest music theatre in the context of All Arias (a biennial festival of domestic and foreign music theatre).

Meet & greet: instrumenten uit de wereld
ISCM-Vlaanderen, Kunstenpunt en Concertgebouw Brugge organiseren op 28 APRIL 2023 in Concertgebouw Brugge een sectornamiddag over componeren voor instrumenten uit heel de wereld.
WAAROM?
We weten in Vlaanderen weinig over de boeiende werelden van de balafon, darbouka, erhu, kannel, kemenche, duduk, oed of sheng. Je ziet ze soms opduiken in Calls for Works van nieuwemuziekfestivals, maar op die oproepen komt niet altijd veel respons. Aan interesse geen gebrek, maar hoe pak je als componist zo’n ontdekkingstocht aan? Hoog tijd dus om ons te verdiepen in die instrumenten.
Tijdens deze sectornamiddag zetten we voluit in op het delen van enthousiasme en expertise. Daarom organiseren we een meet & greet met experten en zoeken we muzikanten die best practices of inzichten uit een geslaagd project met hedendaagse muziek voor instrumenten uit heel de wereld willen delen.
CONCREET: iedere spreker krijgt een tijdsslot van 10 minuten voor een korte presentatie of demonstratie (evt. aan de hand van een video). Zo is er zeker genoeg gespreksstof. Nadien nodigen we alle aanwezigen uit voor een babbeltje, met een hapje en een drankje erbij. Deze ‘meet & greet’ zal plaatsvinden op 28 april 2023 van 16.00 uur tot +/- 18.00 uur.

Dat kan aan de hand van een kort filmpje of geschreven voorstel (max. 1 A4), en mag in grote lijnen of in puntjes.
Er is een vergoeding voorzien voor de sprekers.
Benieuwd naar de rest van het programma?

Key note speaker Olmo Cornelis bijt de spits af. Hij is componist, musicoloog, etnomusicoloog en muzikant. Gefascineerd door de muziek uit Midden-Afrika vormt deze de rode draad in zijn activiteiten. In zijn doctoraatsonderzoek aan het Conservatorium Gent onderzocht Cornelis hoe je met behulp van computationele technieken muziek kan beschrijven zonder te vertrekken vanuit westerse muzikale concepten. De resultaten bieden nieuwe mogelijkheden voor componisten en musici in het gebruik van onder andere klankkleuren, toonladders, vocale en instrumentale technieken.
Nadien volgt een gesprek met de Londense componiste Bushra El-Turk, in wiens werk westerse en oosterse muziektradities samenvloeien en niet zelden sociaal-culturele problematieken tegen het licht gehouden worden. Daarbij verliest ze ook haar eigen Libanese wortels niet uit het oog. In opdracht van Concertgebouw Brugge schreef El-Turk Vane (voor taegŭm, kamāncha & accordeon) voor de Angel Room. De creatie vindt plaats op vrijdagavond 28 april om 19.00 uur. Om 20.00 uur presenteert LOD El-Turks muziektheatervoorstelling Woman at Point Zero in het kader van All Arias (een tweejaarlijks festival voor muziektheater uit binnen- en buitenland).
Het sectormoment wordt georganiseerd door MATRIX [Centrum voor Nieuwe Muziek] (in het kader van de werking als Vlaamse afdeling van de International Society for Contemporary Music) en Kunstenpunt, in samenwerking met Concertgebouw Brugge.
