Call for Works – educational scores for clarinet
As a documentation centre and educational organization, MATRIX [New Music Centre] introduces diverse audiences to contemporary music. Our activities include workshops, exhibitions, book publications, summer school and much more. Having published score collections for guitar, saxophone, piano, brass instruments and strings, we are now preparing a collection of recent scores for clarinet, suitable for amateur musicians.
What we are looking for …
- Our primary focus is on solo works for any member of the clarinet family (from Eb clarinet to Bb contrabass clarinet), with or without piano accompaniment,
- We are also happy to consider duos, trios, quartets and ensemble pieces, as well as compositions involving electronics,
- Compositions should be fit for beginning/young musicians, ranging from beginner level to pre-conservatory level; e.g. the piano accompaniment or a second part—to be played by the teacher—can be more demanding.
- We are especially interested in relatively short works,
- We’d like to stress that graphic scores are eligible as well,
- We do not keep a strict limit as to the year of composition. In addition to recent or even newly composed works, somewhat older compositions may also be submitted.
Submissions should include …
- the score in PDF. Please make sure to include clear instructions wherever relevant, e.g. regarding any extended techniques or specific notation forms.
- a recording, if available, or a digital mockup.
- a short text outlining the strengths of the submitted piece in an educational context. Ideally, submitted works are accompanied by a recommendation from a music teacher or a testimonial from someone who has played the work. If not provided with submission, this information will be asked for in case of selection.
- A short biography of the composer, preferably with a link to the composers’ website.
Timing
Submissions will be accepted until 15 September 2026. After this date, a selection committee appointed by MATRIX will make a selection of works to be included. The results of this selection process will be announced in December 2026.
Publication
Our collection will be published in the form of a PDF score bundle (similar to our previous collections), but will also be integrated into a new online platform for educational scores.
Agreements will be made with the composers of the selected works regarding the copyright to the score. We also provide a license fee.
Thank you in advance for your contribution to our project!
